Is It Selective Hearing or Something Bigger?

Let’s be honest, we’ve all used the ‘selective hearing’ joke once or twice. “Interesting that you can hear the football score, but can’t hear me asking you to do the dishes! Good selective hearing that you’ve got there!” But have you found yourself saying variations of this more often lately? While selective hearing is a real phenomenon, the issue can signify something deeper— but there are ways it can be addressed.

This blog explores what selective hearing is, who’s most likely to experience it, and how it can be addressed. For further information, contact our team at Tweak Hearing today.

What is Selective Hearing?

Selective hearing is the more common term for a phenomenon called hearing loss by attention. It refers to when somebody unconsciously blocks out noises or sounds unrelated to something they’re focused intently on, for example, a video game, their work, or a good book.

Initially, the person trying to get their attention can feel ignored or hurt. This is a normal reaction, but trust us when we say they’re not tuning you out on purpose! We’re all surrounded by multiple sounds and noises every day, and our brains can only handle so much sensory information at one time. However when selective hearing appears to happen more often, it’s a good idea to consider if anything can be done to help.

Who Experiences Hearing Difficulties?

While it can affect anybody, men are nearly three times more likely to experience hearing difficulties than women are. This is because men are more likely to work in loud environments (for example, machinery, traffic, or construction) or enjoy hobbies that take place in loud environments (motorcycle riding, car racing, audio production, and so on).

In the US, more than 22 million employees are exposed to harmful noise levels every day at their place of work. While this most frequently affects men, women work in loud industries as well. Additionally, children can also experience selective hearing and hearing difficulties.
